The Homestake Visitor Center provides captivating surface tours that explain Homestake Gold Mine's underground and surface operations. The tour follows the mining process including hoisting, crushing and milling of the underground ore, views Homestake Gold Mine's state-of-the-art Waste Water Treatment Plant and the Open Cut Mine. Also included in the tour, is the historic town of Lead.
This one hour guided tour starts on the observation deck. Visitors are taken via trolley through the city of Lead up to the Homestake surface operations area. The trolley will drop off visitors at the Yates Hoist Room where inside, the operations are explained. Tour ends by returning to the Homestake Visitor Center.
The tours run daily from May-September. You do not need to book a tour in advance unless you have a large group. For this we recommend that you book your tour a few days in advance. We also offer group rates.
The Homestake Visitor Center offers free viewing of the historic 1876 Open Cut mining area, artifacts, historic and educational memorabilia, informational mining video and a gift shop. Gold panning is offered on the observation deck.
