Good Morning!
Human beings are fascinated by stories – we tell stories, and listen to stories, and watch stories, and read stories, and share stories! When’s the last time you watched a tv show or read a book and the story went like this, “So and So had a great life – everything went perfectly and they lived happily ever after. The end.” B…o…r…i…n…g!
What makes stories great to participate in/watch/read is that they’re overflowing with conflict. It’s sometimes hard to choke down the fact that our own lives – which really are stories too – are also FULL of conflict. But troubles give our life shape and depth. They teach us and challenge us and ultimately keep life interesting and exciting.
Our town is another story, one we also get to participate in by living here or being from here. Lead and her people have definitely had their trials – from hewing something out of almost nothing, to the the massive undertaking of searching for gold, to the closure of the mine, to the transition to science, to the struggle to survive in business and hard weather, and now the imminent and ginormous changes that are happening because of everything that 2020 brought about. We’re seeing an influx of new people, housing prices are skyrocketing – the terrifying and thrilling start of a new age. Our conflict only seems to get bigger and more exciting! This is scary (most of us don’t want to see our little old scrappy Lead turn into Jackson Hole), and many people bemoan this change.
The truth is, Lead won’t be the same today as it was yesterday, and another year or two could very well make it unrecognizable to us now. But wow, what a great story we’re in the midst of writing! How will you be part of everything that’s happening? Do you have the guts for the big story we’re telling?

Today, Thursday 5/13
The Black Hills Mining Museum continues it’s soft opening for the season – Thursday – Saturdays until Memorial Day when they will return to full time open.
12pm – Join Deadwood History for their monthly Preservation Thursdays at the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center. This month the topic is – King of the Hills: The Untold Story of the Real Al Swearingen.
6pm – May’s Virtual Deep Talks will be “Looking for life on Mars with SHERLOC”

Friday 5/14
10am – We’re hosting a ribbon cutting here at the Visitor Center for one of our newest members, Beth Staeckeler with The Christians Team of Keller Williams! If you can make it down, we’d love to introduce you to her and support one of our newer real estate members!
5:30pm – Zumba is resuming at Explore Fitness & Adventures with Debbie! It will be at 5:30pm every Friday and 6:30 every Wednesday. I love these classes and can attest to the fact that no real dancing skills are required – it’s just a fun upbeat way to get some exercise!
5:30pm-7:30pm – Skate Night at the Handley Recreation Center! These events are back after such a long hiatus!! Please use the entrance directly off Miners Avenue (not the Boys & Girls Club entrance). $3 admission and $2 skate rental.
Saturday, 5/15
9:30-3:30 – The Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center is hosting their monthly Makers Market! Come check out the venders and see what great new things they’ve got in the gift shop!
1pm – It’s spring in Lead and Katrina is hosting a clean up day for our town! Meet at Explore Fitness & Adventures to join her! Stay for live music at 6pm (until 8pm) and grab some beer/wine and snacks as well!
6:30pm – Lead Assembly of God is hosting the Holy Ghost Tour at the Homestake Opera House with Renae Pilsing. This event is free and open to the public.
Sunday 5/16
12-3pm – The Rod & Gun Club is hosting a Cub Scout (ages 5-10) and Boy Scout (ages 11-18) recruiting day! Come enjoy a bbq and activities to kick of the summer! Tarl Pearman 605-939-0342 for more information.

THOMAS GRIER DAY! Come help us celebrate a man who helped make Lead great on his birthday! 9:30-noon we’ll be doing a trash pick up, meet up at the statue of TJ Grier in front of the Episcopal Church on Main Street. At noon we’ll reconvene at the statue to hear the proclamation from the Mayor, a short speech on why Mr. Grier is someone worth remembering and birthday cake from Rustic Nook Bakery!
4:30-7 – Thomas Grier Day continues at the Homestake Opera House (which was largely the brain child of Thomas Grier). Mr. Thomas Golden and his staff will be hosting a special Open House event with refreshments and entertainment. They’ll also be releasing their new season line up! You don’t want to miss it!
5/19 – Wednesday
Nikki is hosting a painting class at her shop, Energetic Rising on Main Street. The cost is $40 and you can reserve your spot by calling (605) 591-9943.
