Lead’s (not) On Fire

Good Morning & Happy Thursday!

It’s no secret that I might be Lead’s biggest fan. (If you are new to these emails … now you know!!)

This last week I had the privilege of getting an in depth tour of the fire department here in Lead. The members of the department went through each truck – ranging from “Big Red”, purchased in the early 80’s to the most recent acquisition a few years ago. As the mom of a son who’s already obsessed with trucks, heavy equipment and vehicles of every kind, I kind of got the appeal of the fire department.

Our volunteer department serves not just the city of Lead but also for the surrounding areas, including Terry Peak and Deer Mountain and Powderhouse Pass. They have to deal with crazy winters, lots of snow (what’s the plan if we got another Atlas storm?) and other difficult circumstances.

The members of the department have done a smash up job of retrofitting each truck and vehicle to best meet the needs of our town and region – and largely on their own time all the while keeping expenses as low as possible.

Lead has had a shoestring budget for many years now and I am always proud of how well we manage our meager funds. My tour of the fire department was no different. I’m honored to know that we have a group of people who care so deeply that they would serve with almost no compensation in such an important capacity. The department is always looking for new people to join their team so if you’re interested in finding out more information I can connect you with the right people.
