Happy 4th of July

Happy Independence Day Weekend!!

I know that there are many of you who are disappointed that we have postponed the events and the fireworks. I am too. This has been a crazy year (to say the least) and not just because everything got canceled and continues to be on shaky planning ground. I sometimes like to look back on events in my life and think, “Man, if I hadn’t done this or been there I never would have met so and so and without meeting so and so my life would have taken a completely different track!” Life is a crazy series of events that take us in directions and to places we usually could never have imagined. The really weird thing about this year is that we all had that happen at the same time.

Postponing the 4th of July this year is one of those things that pushes us around. A few people have been pretty upset because they feel that we’re going to lose our momentum. “Deadwood is going to win!” Win what? I’m super excited that they have the new Outlaw Square, and they’re doing the parade (I believe you can still sign up if you haven’t yet)! It’s not a zero sum competition. There is PLENTY of good stuff in the world for Deadwood AND for Lead. I’m also excited that Mt. Rushmore and Belle Fourche are still doing all their holiday activities this weekend. Things WILL change because of our decision to postpone but it might also change for the best.

As Leigha, Kate and I have started brainstorming Gold Camp Jubilee over the Labor Day weekend it occurred to us that celebrating our Mining Heritage couldn’t really be on a better weekend. Maybe we’ll keep it there, who knows? But no matter what we’re looking forward to an even bigger and better fireworks show over the Open Cut in 2021!!

I hope you are able to spend this weekend doing the things you love with your family. BBQing and porch sitting are high on our agenda.

____Other News & Notes____

We’re still hiring a few enthusiastic people to help us in the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center. This job would be part time and include weekends. We’re hoping to find someone to start in August and work at least through October. We’ve built a really fun team this year and you’d be helping us in the gift shop and giving our indoor tour. If you’re interested come visit us (or call).

MartyAnn Apa from the Lead Beautification team would like to thank everyone again for turning out to plant flowers. “It was the best turnout we have had in many years and encourage people to get involved with Lead Beautification so we can continue to provide flowers throughout the town.” Contact Linda Phillips, Pat Asmussen, Jean Martin, or MartyAnn Apa for more information. We’d also like to shout out to Evelyn, on the city parks staff, who drives around all day and waters the flowers.

The Treasures Trash to Cash twin city garage sale will be Saturday September 12 from 7am-1pm. This will be announced in the Pioneer. If you’d like to hold a garage sale you can get it listed in the master event by contacting Denese Emanuel at the Neighborhood Works office (605)578-1401, [email protected]. This event is sponsored by the Lead Chamber and several other businesses and organization in Lead and Deadwood so there is no charge for individuals to participate.

The Handley Recreation Center has canceled all Lead Live events for this summer. We’re looking forward to 2021!
