Remember When All We Had Was to Complain About the Weather

Gooooooood Morning Lead!

Have you been outside lately? We’ve had some beautiful days. On a walk this week I even smelled that Black Hills summer smell. You could blind fold me and drop me anywhere in the world and I would always recognize the smell of home. I can never quite put my finger on it, our dirt, rocks, pine needles – a special combination of all of them? The snow is melting, the days still shock me with their length, and the street sweeper has been making its way around town getting rid of that winter grunge. Summer is coming back.

Never has a summer been met with so much anticipation – such hope! Things are inching towards opening up, slowly unfurling. It will be an interesting time in the next few months to see how things go and how we proceed. Remember to be kind to each other and gentle, it’s been a hard time for everyone in many ways both seen and unseen.

_____ Here’s what’s going on around town _____

Friday, May 1st

9am – We’re continuing our Feeding Lead program at the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center. You do not need to call ahead, you do not need to be qualified. You can come for yourself, or someone else. Drive up service. We’ll be there until we run out of stuff to give away. This program is sponsored by: Coeur Wharf, Homestake Mining Co, Black Hills Title, Sanford Underground Research Facility, Miners & Merchants Trading Post and several individuals. Thank you to everyone who donated and if you’d like to partner with us let me know!

11am – Stampmill is reopening with curbside service!! We’re so excited to welcome them back to business!

Sunday, May 3rd

4pm – Take Out Tailgate Party. Grab your favorite take out (did we mention Stampmill will be open) and join us in the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center parking lot from the back of your car to enjoy some socially distant social time! If the weather is bad we obviously will postpone this event. Check our event on Facebook for updates.

Wednesday, May 6th

10am – Gold Camp Jubilee Planning meeting – virtual meeting, we’re hoping to know more after the 5/4 City Commission meeting about the 4th of July. Stay tuned on Facebook.

All Day – The Lead Chamber is teaming up with Impact Magazine (Evergreen Media) for Facebook: The Curbside Project – a photo gallery that is keeping our social distance while highlighting the faces behind local businesses who are open during this time. If you’d like to participate just fill out the form: they’ll schedule a time on May 6th to come photograph you in front of your business and include in their gallery – all totally free!

Thursday, May 7th – Cheyenne Crossing will be reopening 7am-8pm. They’ll have inside and outside seating as well as carryout. Still on winter hours Thursday-Sunday until Memorial Day.

Sunday, May 10 – Mother’s Day, Bloomers is doing lots of fun things for the holiday but be sure to make your reservations early! (605)578-7737

Sunday, May 17 – Graduation Day! This is a weird year to be a high school senior! They’ll be having a drive up graduation at 2pm followed by a parade through Lead and Deadwood. If you’re on Main Street we’d love to see you decorate your windows to celebrate this year’s graduates!

Sunday, May 24 – Tentative: Lead Trash Pick Up Day! We don’t really need to do this as a group but it’s always more fun to do yucky work together!

Other notes:

Did you see Subway is open again? Congratulations on a great remodel! We didn’t choose to go through this strange time but we really applaud businesses who can take advantage of this opportunity to revamp!

Good Shepherd Clinic in Spearfish will remain closed through June 1st. Call Monument Health at (605)717-8595 and identify yourself as a GSC patient. Follow them on Facebook for more detailed information.

If you’d like to help Lead Beautification plant flowers this summer they’ll be planting the last week of May (weather permitting) or the first week of June. I’ll keep you posted with more details as I get them.

If your business has plans to reopen please let us know so we can help promote!!

Stay Tough, Lead!
